Construction of music video - putting the narrative and performance together

As the narrative was edited on a different computer, we had to import these shots into the performance.

Once I had imported them as one long scene, I had to cut and edit the shots into the appropriate places in the music video.

Editing these scenes took some time as they still had to be made a lot shorter to fit into the beat of the music. To help us get all the shots in the right place we made a brief plan of the order of the shots and where about in the video we wanted them. This helped a lot when it came to putting them in the right place in order for them to make sense.

Construction of music video - filters

In my research and planning I have looked at some existing music video's within the same genre as my own. I have seen that many of them either have the colours made brighter and to stand out more or have the saturation very low to make a darker effect across the video. I experimented with the saturation and contrast to see which filters looked best on the footage.

After trying out both a low saturated filter and a high one I thought that both looked good but decided that it would be best to highlight the colours in the video as the costume consisted of black white and red and these are all significant colours and I wanted the red to stand out. However there are certain parts of the song, where the beat changes that could have a lower saturation on that part of the footage.

Construction of the music video - markers

During the construction of the video I used different coloured markers to help me cut to the beat. I added markers in where I felt a cut to a different shot was a appropriate. By doing this I was able to edit much more accurately and it made the performance a lot more interesting to watch as the cuts gave a bigger impact.

Construction of music video - Motion

Throughout the music video it was sometimes appropriate for me to edit the motion of certain shots. For example zooming in slightly on shots that may have been too wide to make certain things stand out more and for the shots to make a bigger impact. I also edited the angles which certain shots were shown at to make them more interesting to watch and to create dissorientation.

Editing Performance shots and experimenting with effects

After making some multiclips of the performance I experimented with some of the filters and changing around the brightness and contrast to make the shots look more interesting. I also thought about which effects would be appropriate to use for the genre of my music video.

I cut away at some of the shots to show the ones underneath. I did this where some of the shots were too long and where the instruments being shown weren't the most dominant ones being heard in the song.

I also added in some different shots in certain parts of the song where I thought they were appropriate. For example, I added in an extreme close up of the bass guitar in the parts of the song the guitar could clearly be heard.

Construction of the music video - making multi clips

To make the construction of the performance quicker and easier I decided to use several multiclips, this way I would have more shots to cut away to later on in the construction.

After making the first multiclip I had an idea of how to edit it to the beat and also where I wanted certain shots to be. For example, I knew I wanted the close up of the lead singer where the lyrics kicked in and I knew I wanted the beginning of the track to show the guitarist.
